Green Rolex Submariner Differences (Hulk vs Kermit vs Starbucks)

Rolex Kermit vs Rolex Hulk vs Rolex Starbucks: The Green Rolex Evolution

Rolex Submariners are highly coveted timepieces known for their exceptional craftsmanship and iconic design. Among the Submariner collection, three models stand out for their striking color green: the Rolex 16610LV "Kermit," Rolex 116610LV "Hulk," and Rolex 1266120LV "Starbucks." In this ultimate guide, we will explore the key differences between these three legendary watches, including dial variations, movement differences, production years, availability, retail prices, average pre-owned prices, case size, and their relative popularity.

History of the First Generation Rolex "Kermit"

The Rolex Submariner 16610LV, nicknamed the "Kermit", was released in 2003 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Submariner line. The "Kermit" was notable for its green bezel, a new design element in the Submariner series. The model was in production for seven years before it was replaced by the "Hulk" in 2010. The "Hulk", or the Submariner 116610LV, was viewed as an evolution of the "Kermit", with the green design extended to the dial as well as the bezel.

Rolex 16610LV "Kermit"

The Rolex 16610LV "Kermit" made its debut in 2003, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Submariner collection. It features a classic black dial with gold hour markers and luminous hands. The signature green aluminum bezel insert sets it apart, and over time, different batches of the "Kermit" featured subtle variations in the font shape and size on the bezel. Powered by the Rolex Caliber 3135 self-winding movement, this model was in production until 2010. As a discontinued model, the 16610LV "Kermit" can now only be found on the pre-owned market.

The original retail price was around $8,000, and the average pre-owned price ranges from $15,000 to $18,000.

It is also improtant to note that there are some variations with this model such as the Flat 4 and the Sharp 4. These denote a difference on the shape of the "4" in the "40" of the bezel. A Flat 4 generally demands a much higher price due to its limited availability and demand. Some Flat 4s on the pre-owned market can fetch as high as $45,000-$65,000 - pending its condition, box and papers.

Rolex 116610LV "Hulk"

Introduced in 2010 as a successor to the "Kermit," the Rolex 116610LV "Hulk" brought about several notable changes. It boasts a vibrant green dial and matching green Cerachrom bezel insert, giving it a bold and modern appearance. The dial has a distinct shine compared to the matte finish of the "Kermit."

The 116610LV "Hulk" retained the 40mm case size, powered by the Rolex Caliber 3135 movement, and maintained the unidirectional green bezel. It was discontinued in 2020, but it is still relatively available on the pre-owned market.

The retail price for the "Hulk" was approximately $9,050, while the average pre-owned price ranges from $20,000 to $25,000.

Rolex 1266120LV "Starbucks"

The Rolex 1266120LV "Starbucks" is a recent addition to the Submariner family, introduced in 2021. It features a black dial with green hour markers and luminous hands, reminiscent of its predecessors. The green Cerachrom bezel insert complements the dial, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

Key Differences Between the Rolex Kermit, Hulk and Starbucks

Green Rolex Submariner Dials

Rolex Kermit Dial: The "Kermit" maintained the classic matte black dial of the Submariner range, contrasted with a green bezel. This traditional design, coupled with gold markings and luminous hands, is cherished by collectors who feel that a true Submariner's dial should be black.

Rolex Hulk Dial: The "Hulk" adopted a more modern and distinct look by not only incorporating a sunburst green dial but also moving away from the matte finish. The "Hulk's" dial has a distinctive shine, which sets it apart from the crowd and propels it from a classic to a modern timepiece.

Rolex Starbucks Dial: The Rolex 1266120LV "Starbucks" features a black dial with Chromalight hour markers. The Chromalight hour markers provide enhanced visibility in low-light conditions, ensuring accurate timekeeping even in the dark. This feature adds practicality to the watch, making it highly functional for divers and those in various professional settings.

Green Rolex Submariner Bezel Differences

Rolex Kermit Bezel: The green bezel of the "Kermit" is its defining feature and the reason for its name. Over time, the bezel design evolved with different batches of the "Kermit" featuring slightly different font shapes and sizes, especially the number 4. The "Kermit's" bezel is unidirectional and made of an aluminium insert.

Rolex Hulk Bezel: The "Hulk", while maintaining a green bezel, upgraded the bezel material to Cerachrom and adopted a slightly different, darker shade of green to match the dial. The "Hulk's" bezel is also unidirectional.

Rolex Starbucks BezelThe "Starbucks" features a unidirectional rotatable bezel with a green Cerachrom insert and platinum-coated numerals. The use of a green Cerachrom insert ensures durability, resistance to scratches, and color longevity. The platinum-coated numerals on the bezel provide a luxurious touch while enhancing readability.

*Fun Fact: The unidirectional design allows for precise timekeeping during dives, as it prevents accidental movement of the bezel in the wrong direction.

Case Sizes of the Green Rolex Submariner Models

Rolex Kermit Case: Both the "Kermit" and the "Hulk" are 40mm watches. However, the "Kermit" is known for its slim profile and comfortable fit, with many believing it to be one of the most well-proportioned Submariners ever made.

Rolex Hulk Case: In contrast, the "Hulk" comes with Rolex’s "Maxi case", which is larger and gives the watch a chunkier look. The lugs and crown guard on the "Hulk" are also double the size of the "Kermit's".

Rolex Starbucks Case: The "Starbucks" features a slightly larger 41mm case compared to the 40mm cases of the "Hulk" and "Kermit." The increased case size gives the "Starbucks" a more prominent presence on the wrist, providing a modern and substantial feel. The larger case may appeal to those who prefer a bolder and more contemporary look. Additionally, the 41mm case may offer improved legibility of the dial and bezel, enhancing the overall readability of the watch.

Green Rolex Submariner Movement & Bracelet Style

Different Style Bracelets: All three watches are feature bracelets made of Oystersteel, but the clasps differ: the "Kermit" has an Oysterlock clasp, while the "Hulk" and "Starbucks" are equipped with a Glidelock clasp

Movement:
Despite the differences in age, both the 16610LV "Kermit" and the 116610LV "Hulk" watches use the same movement – the calibre 3135. This movement, which has been in production since 1988, is found across many Rolex models. It is an automatic movement with an analog display, 31 jewels, a vibration rate of 28,800 BPH, a 48-hour power reserve, and a diameter of 28.5 mm. It supports functions such as hours, minutes, seconds, and a date display at 3 o'clock. The movement is also COSC certified, ensuring exceptional timekeeping regardless of whether it's in a "Kermit" or a "Hulk.

The Rolex 1266120LV "Starbucks" is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3235 movement. The significance of this movement lies in its advanced technology and enhanced performance. The Caliber 3235 offers improved precision, reliability, and a longer power reserve of up to 70 hours. It incorporates Rolex's latest innovations, such as the Chronergy escapement, which enhances energy efficiency and accuracy. The movement also undergoes rigorous testing and meets Rolex's stringent standards for precision and durability. With the Caliber 3235, the "Starbucks" ensures exceptional timekeeping and reliability, reflecting Rolex's commitment to excellence.

Evolution of The Green Model Rolex Submariner's

The Rolex 16610LV "Kermit," Rolex 116610LV "Hulk," and Rolex 1266120LV "Starbucks" each hold a distinct place in the Submariner lineage. The "Kermit" represents a milestone anniversary edition, cherished for its classic design. The "Hulk" embodies a bold and contemporary aesthetic, capturing attention with its vibrant green dial and bezel. Meanwhile, the "Starbucks" carries the Submariner legacy forward with its updated movement and refined design. As with any iconic Rolex timepiece, their desirability and market values may vary, making them exceptional choices for watch enthusiasts seeking a standout Submariner.
